Dear First Year Student:
Congratulations and welcome to The College of New Jersey Class of 2017! We eagerly await your arrival as we begin our 159th year of service to the citizens of New Jersey. You are now a member of that proud tradition. The fall semester begins for you with Welcome Week, which is outlined on our website and a detailed schedule will be posted soon. Welcome Week is part of The College’s First Year Experience (FYE) Program and has been created to enhance your transition into our community.
It is expected that through your Welcome Week involvement you will learn to:
- Understand TCNJ’s mission and values
- Develop positive social bonds
- Learn about community expectations and standards
- Establish safe and healthy life-style practices
- Be aware of resources and services
- Participate in co-curricular opportunities
- Understand intellectual engagement and critical thinking
- Value a Liberal Arts Education
Attendance is required at all activities that are a part of this program. Students living on campus will begin their full schedule of educational and social events shortly after move-in on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Off Campus Students’ experiences will also begin on Thursday, August 22 at 6pm in Brower Student Center room 202W. It is imperative that all students participate in every aspect of Welcome Week to gain the full benefits of this exciting and meaningful orientation program.
Once on campus, you will be given a detailed Welcome Week schedule. You will meet student leaders who have returned to campus early to welcome and assist you in building your future at TCNJ. You will also be introduced to the staff that will be available to you during this program and throughout the year. A Parents Welcome Session will be held Thursday, August 22 at from 11:00am-3:00pm in Brower Student Center room 210, where senior administrators will be available to answer any questions or concerns.
Students will enjoy a Spoken Word/Poetry Slam as one of our initial Welcome Week events. Please feel free to bring your poetry or other written works to share during this special event. You are also encouraged to attend our TCNJ Idol Talent Show that will be held on Thursday evening, to showcase all your talent, so be sure to bring your musical instruments.
Most of the program is casual, so bring comfortable and appropriate clothing for the weather. You will be walking around campus, which means walking shoes are a must. Air-conditioned buildings can be cold so you may want to bring a sweater.
Bring your swimsuit just in case you want to cool off in the pool. Convocation is the formal ceremony that opens the academic year, proper attire is required.
Please visit the Welcome Week website regularly for updates. Should you have additional questions about this program, please do not hesitate to call our office at (609) 771-2466.
On behalf of the entire Welcome Week planning committee, we wish you an enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing you next week.
